The CIA Insider Who Leaked Top-Secret US Plans to Stop an Attack on Iran: Inside the Modern Spy Scandal

The world of international espionage has just been rocked by one of the most dangerous internal leaks in recent US history. A high-ranking CIA official with top-secret security clearance was arrested and charged with leaking highly classified intelligence documents regarding Israel’s military plans to attack Iran.
This isn’t a script from a Hollywood movie. This is a real-world security breach that disrupted global geopolitics and exposed deep divisions within the American intelligence community.
Who is Asif William Rahman?
The man at the center of the storm is Asif William Rahman, a veteran government employee who worked abroad for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Unlike low-level whistleblowers, Rahman possessed a “Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information” (TS/SCI) clearance. This meant he had daily access to the most guarded secrets of the United States government, including raw satellite imagery, military movements, and eyes-only intelligence briefings.
But behind closed doors, Rahman was reportedly growing deeply disturbed by the unfolding military escalation in the Middle East.
The Telegram Leak That Shocked the Pentagon
The crisis began when two highly classified documents prepared by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) suddenly appeared on an Iranian-linked Telegram channel called Middle East Spectator.
The documents detailed a terrifying reality: satellite tracking of the Israeli military preparing, moving, and loading advanced air-to-surface ballistic missiles for a massive retaliatory strike against Iran. The files also revealed top-secret US assessments of Israel’s nuclear weapons capabilities—a subject both countries almost never discuss publicly.
The Pentagon went into immediate lockdown. The leak didn’t just expose Israel’s war plans; it proved that the US was actively spying on its closest ally.
Hunted in Cambodia: The FBI Interception
The FBI launched a massive, frantic manhunt to find the mole before more damage could be done. Investigators traced the digital footprint of the leaked files directly back to Rahman’s classified workspace.
Rahman was tracked down to Cambodia, where he was working on an overseas assignment for the CIA. FBI agents, working alongside international authorities, intercepted and arrested him just as he was attempting to move again.
He was quickly flown to a federal court in Guam to face heavy charges under the Espionage Act.
Why Did He Do It? The Invisible Rift in the CIA
While the US government officially treats Rahman as a traitor who put national security at risk, geopolitical analysts suggest a deeper, more complex motive.
There has been growing, silent tension within Western intelligence agencies regarding the unchecked escalation of war in the Middle East. Many insiders fear that an all-out war between Israel and Iran could drag the United States into a catastrophic regional conflict.
By exposing the attack plans to the world, the leaker effectively delayed the strike and forced both governments to change their military codes and strategy.
Whether Rahman acted out of ideological opposition to the war or for other motives, his actions have proven one terrifying truth: even in the era of advanced cybersecurity, the greatest threat to America’s deepest secrets is still the person holding the key.
